Deceased Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev participated in a 2011 gruesome triple homicide outside Boston along with a Chechen killed early Wednesday during a confrontation with the FBI and Massachusetts State Police in Orlando, Florida, a federal law enforcement official told a news daily.

Ibragim Todashev, who died during the interview with authorities, not only confessed to his direct role in slashing the throats of three people in Waltham, Massachusetts, but also fingered Tsarnaev in the deaths, the official said Wednesday.

Todashev was being questioned about the slayings and his acquaintance with Tsarnaev.

Todashev attacked an FBI agent, who shot him dead, a federal law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the case told a news daily.

“He used some kind of weapon,” the official said, and that prompted the FBI agent to shoot the suspect.

A second law enforcement official confirmed Todashev made the confession.

The unsolved triple murder received renewed interest after it was learned that Tsarnaev had been a good friend of one of the Waltham victims.

Todashev told investigators the men were killed during a drug ripoff because he and Tsarnaev were afraid they would be able to identify them and tell police what happened, according to a law enforcement source.

So far, no link has been found between Todashev and the Boston Marathon bombings. However, the FBI is looking into the many connections between Todashev and Tsarnaev, whose radicalization allegedly led to the Boston bombings.

A federal law enforcement official has told a news daily they were initially led to Todashev because they learned he knew Tsarnaev and his younger brother, Dzhokhar. They also said cell phone records connected Tamerlan and Todashev.

Todashev was being interviewed in the kitchen of his Florida home. He grabbed a knife, which is why fatal force was used, according to a source briefed on the ongoing investigation.

“Preliminary information indicates the agent took actions to defend himself,” said a federal law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the case.

“The agent sustained non-life-threatening injuries,” FBI spokesman Jason Pack said.

Investigators are awaiting test results to determine whether Todashev’s DNA was found at the Massachusetts triple murder scene and whether the DNA of Tamerlan Tsarnaev also was found there.

Todashev and Tsarnaev were acquainted through a mixed martial arts center near Boston, said a source briefed on the bombing investigation.

In Orlando, an FBI team is reviewing the circumstances of the shooting, a procedure that follows any FBI shooting.

Todashev had an impending flight from Orlando, via New York and Moscow, to Chechnya, when investigators sought to interview him, according to a source briefed on the ongoing investigation. He was told not to take the flight, the source said.

Details emerged Wednesday about how Todashev had Tsarnaev’s phone number in his cell phone, said the source.

Both men were members of a mixed martial arts forum, along with Russian-Canadian boxer-turned-jihadist William Plotnikov, the source said.

Last month,a news daily reported that Plotnikov and six others died in a July 2012 firefight with Russian forces in the southwestern republic of Dagestan, while Tsarnaev was visiting the region, according to a source briefed on the investigation.

Todashev, 27, knew Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, also a suspect in the April 15 bombings, the official said. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, injured and captured after a manhunt, is being held by authorities. His brother died in a shootout with police.

Todashev was from the Chechnya region, as were the Tsarnaev brothers, the source said.

Todashev was granted political asylum in 2008, but he came to the United States some time before that, a federal law enforcement official told a news daily. Todashev had been living in the United States as a legal resident because of that asylum claim.

In the 2011 Massachusetts triple homicide, the Middlesex County district attorney’s office said at the time that the victims and two unknown perpetrators appeared to know each other and that it was not a random crime. No suspects were named then.

The rupee Wednesday recovered marginally by 6 paise to 55.35 against dollar at the Interbank Foreign Exchange on fresh selling of the US currency by exporters.

Strengthening of the euro against the dollar in overseas market and a higher opening in the domestic equity market supported the rupee, dealers said.

The rupee had lost 30 paise to close at nearly six-month low of 55.41 in the previous session due to sustained dollar demand from importers and weak local equities.

The BSE benchmark Sensex rose by 90.93 points, or 0.45%, to 20,202.54 in early trade.

Asian stocks rose on Wednesday following a positive lead from Wall Street.

Technology companies gain as recent falls in the rupee are making the sector more attractive, although a U.S. immigration bill seen hurting the sector remains an uncertainty. The rupee hits a fresh near six-month low in opening trades.

A U.S. Senate panel on Tuesday approved legislation to give millions of illegal immigrants a path to citizenship, setting up a spirited debate next month in the full Senate over the biggest changes in immigration policy in a generation.

Infosys Ltd (INFY.NS) is up 1.1 percent, while Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS.NS) gains 1.4 percent.

Shares in Tech Mahindra Ltd (TEML.NS) gain 6 percent after its January-March quarter net profit rose 24 percent, beating estimates.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEE.NS) gains 2 percent, while Larsen & Toubro Ltd (LART.NS) is up 0.4 percent ahead of the two companies’ earnings later in the day.

The BSE benchmark Sensex on Tuesday rose by over 66 points in early trade on selective buying by funds, amid an improving trend on other Asian bourses.

The 30-share barometer gained 66.27 points, or 0.33 per cent, to 19,757.94, with IT, PSUs, healthcare and oil and gas sector stocks leading the recovery. The index had lost over 430 points in yesterday’s session.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty moved up by 15.35 points, or 0.26 per cent, to 5,995.80.

A two-year-old girl was sexually assaulted allegedly by her 23-year-old neighbour at her house in Azadpur on Saturday. The accused has been arrested.

According to the police, when the victim’s parents were engaged in some work in the evening, the accused who is a daily wager living in the same locality spotted her and thereafter sexually assaulted her after which he left the spot. As the girl kept screaming, her parents rushed to check what had happened. And suspecting that something was wrong, they took her to a nearby government hospital where they were told by the doctors that the girl had been sexually assaulted.

At this, the victim’s parents made a call to the Police Control Room and investigations led to the accused who was arrested.

Firefighters doused the blaze in Dhaka’s Mirpur district at 2:00am (local time).

The fire is the latest incident to hit Bangladesh’s textile industry, after the collapse of a factory complex last month that left at least 800 dead.

“It is not clear to us how the accident happened, but we are trying to find out the cause,” said Mohammad Atiqul Islam, the president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.

Mr Islam and a fire service official said the Bangladeshi managing director of the company and a senior police officer were among the dead.

A local police chief said seven of people had died from suffocation.

The blaze broke out at a factory belonging to the Tung Hai Group, a large garment exporter, after most workers had gone home.

The incident follows a decision to shut down 18 garment plants on Wednesday to prevent a repeat of the disaster at the Rana Plaza complex, on the outskirts of Dhaka.

Authorities have pledged to the International Labour Organisation that Bangladesh would give safety “the highest consideration”.

Salvage teams are still pulling bodies from the rubble of Rana Complex, and on Thursday a spokesman at the army control room coordinating the operation said the death toll was now nearly 900.

Roughly 2,500 people were rescued from the building, including many injured, but there is no official estimate of the number still missing.

The Punjab Government is keen to let go of the inscription listing separatist leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s name from the “Yadgar” memorial built in memory of those killed during Operation Bluestar despite pressure from the Damdami Taksal that led a march to the Akal Takht today to thwart any such move.

Sources said the inscription at the entrance of the memorial and the plaques on either side of the stairs leading to it mentioned about separatist leaders. This was in direct contravention of the assurance made by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in the state Assembly that the memorial would be a simple gurdwara only.

Sources said while the developments embarrassed the Chief Minister, these had also made him lose face vis a vis his alliance partner-the BJP-which is extremely unhappy at the turn of recent events.

Observers feel the Chief Minister was essentially a moderate and hence could not allow Bhindranwale’s name to be projected in the manner done by the Damdami Taksal.

The SAD has reportedly taken up the issue with Damdami Taksal and members of the Sant Samaj spearheading the current campaign to ensure that the inscriptions are not removed.

 

As per the SAD stand, an understanding was arrived at with some radical elements to pave the way for the establishment of memorial. Despite it being a 20-year-old demand, memorial could not take shape as there was no unanimity on its shape.

 

A section of radical elements, including the Sant Samaj, approached both the CM and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal after coming to an “understanding” that all other parties were misleading the radical leaders and put their “trust” in the Badals on the issue.

 

This helped the SAD to get support of the Sant Samaj for the 2012 Assembly elections. The Sant Samaj also earned legitimacy by getting a long-pending demand “fulfilled”.

 

SAD sources claim it was decided that a memorial to all those who were martyred during Operation Bluestar should come up on the Darbar Sahib complex. This is disputed by the Damdami Taksal which claimed the purpose of the memorial all along had been to commemorate the “martyrs”, including Bhindranwale.

 

The SAD claims the Taksal has “deviated” from this understanding and that no personality-centric memorial should be allowed on the Darbar Sahib complex.

 

The SAD and the government is, however, wary of the Damdami Taksal because the latter is not willing to let go of the “success” achieved by it on the issue.

 

Sources said the Damdami Taksal and its head Harnam Singh Dhumma felt it had “achieved” something which no other radical leader had till now.

 

It is this which is coming in the way of an amicable “settlement” of the issue.

NEW DELHI–Bharti Airtel Ltd.’s 532454.BY -1.77% fiscal fourth-quarter net profit fell 49.4% from a year earlier, hurt by continued losses at the company’s African unit.

Bharti, in which SingTel Z74.SG -0.51% owns about a 32% stake, has been struggling to grow in the face of intense competition and high interest costs on the debt it took on in 2010 to buy the African operations of Mobile Telecommunications Co. K.S.C.

Bharti said Thursday its net profit for the three months ended March fell to 5.09 billion rupees ($94.76 million) from 10.06 billion rupees a year earlier. Consolidated sales rose 9.2% to 204.48 billion rupees.

Ten analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires expected a net profit of 6.57 billion rupees.

The company had more than $11.74 billion in debt at the end of March. It raised $1.5 billion from bonds during the just-ended quarter and has been looking to sell stakes in some of its units to reduce its debt.

Bharti Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said conditions in the Indian telecom market have started improving, with higher-revenue-contributing subscribers and stable tariffs.

“With Africa over its peak of organic investments we are optimistic about the potential for improved market shares and margin expansions,” Mr. Mittal said in a statement.

The company also said its unit Bharti Airtel Holdings Singapore Pte. Ltd. has agreed to buy the remaining 30% stake in Airtel Bangladesh Ltd. that it doesn’t already own from its partner Abu Dhabi-based Warid Telecom.

One of the best places to understand the electoral significance of the emergence of former BJP chief minister B S Yeddyurappa’s Karnataka Janata Party ahead of the May 5 assembly polls in Karnataka is a constituency called Shiggaon in the northwestern district of Haveri.

The KJP was born in Haveri and the MLA from Shiggaon, Basavaraj Bommai, also the water resources minister in the BJP government, is the only one among Haveri’s five BJP MLAs who has not joined Yeddyurappa.

Bommai, a Lingayat community member like Yeddyurappa, and the son of the late chief minister S R Bommai of the Janata Party, was brought into the BJP ahead of the 2008 polls by Yeddyurappa himself.

But Bommai, 53, is now in danger of losing his family’s Shiggaon seat not for want of development but by the sheer capacity of Lingayat strongman Yeddyurappa’s standing in the region and his ability to split the BJP’s Lingayat vote base.

In fact, the fight in Shiggaon is not between Bommai and the KJP’s Lingayat candidate Bapugowda Kashinatha Gowda Patil but between Bommai and the Congress candidate Khadri Sayed Azeem Peer, who had lost to Bommai in 2008 due to a Lingayat vote wave for the BJP.

That is because the 32 per cent Lingayat voters in the constituency of 1.71 lakh votes are expected to end up divided due to the presence of the KJP’s Lingayat candidate and possibly hand over victory to the Congress which has a sizable vote base that includes minorities, backward castes and Dalits.

Campaigning in Hurlikoppe village in his constituency, Bommai exhorted voters to vote for him for bringing development and not to be swayed by those seeking votes on caste lines.

He sought votes for bringing drinking water to the villages, for irrigating some 30,000 acres of dry land, for cementing village roads, for funding temple construction and repair and for creating educational institutions.
